Early Swallow turns up in unusual habitat

03/04/2019 11:54

A Swallow was perched on telegraph wires fronting the Brewers Pride Public House in Healy Road Ossett this morning at 08:30.The bird looked cold and withdrawn in the very cold Northerly wind so was easy to photograph. When I returned at 10:15 the bird had disapeared.

There are 3 Chiff Chaff singing in the hedgerows around the Kerries food factory area but no sign this morning of any other migrants. There was around 850 Gulls on Dewsbury Sewage Works again with around 650 Black Headed Gulls and the rest of mainly 1st and second year Herring Gulls with a small sprinkling of Lesser Black Back (15 on this occassion0Gulls.

A Merlin was consistantly trying to harrass the Black Headed Gulls for about 30 minutes with 2 Oyster catchers and 4 Lapwings present also.3 Goosanders(1 male) and a single Green Sandpiper is present on the riverbank below Earlsheaton.

Most of the larger Gulls appear to be flying in from the West.
