22/11/2023 13:04Although i rank Messingham Sand Quarry has been very much a Spring and Summer/Autumn Reserve it offers interesting walks in both Late Autumn and Winter
On this occassion a quick early stop into the fierst of 2 hides was very worthwhile.
A quick count of the wildfowl on offer produced some 340 Gadwall,8 Tufted Ducks,2 Teal,133 Coot,40 Shoveller and some 680 Grey lag Geese rapidly increasing after my departutr(my coiunt for the previous week was some 1500 birds.
A feeding party of mainly titmice produced some 22 Long Tailed.1 Coal Tit ,4 Great Tits and 6 Blue Tits as well as 2 Goldcrests.
It was nice whilst scouring the ground for Fungi 2 Woodcock flushed from underfoot with a third bird flushed from a silver Birch tree and allowing me to get within 8 feet before it took to flight
A Cream Crowned Marsh Harrier hunted briefly in front of the second hide for around 10 minutes without success on this occassion
