A stunning male Mandarin Duck flew down the calder near healy Road Ossett this morning.With recent sightings of a female bird in the same area over the last 2 weeks we have to conclude that the birds are intent on breeding in the area over the next few weeks.

a Winchat was on Dewsbury sewage works late this afternoon.The bird spent the whole of its time in the centre of the western part of the works but proved difficult to get close to.

There where 2 Buzzards over Dewsbury this morning.A typical Common buzzard was over Earlsheaton at 09:45 and a second much smaller and slimmer bird flew over the willow Plantations at Mill Bank Thornhill being mobbed by 6 Jackdaws at around 09:55.

There is at least 1000 Swallows hawking over the sprinkler beds on Dewsbury Sewage works this morning(at 09:45).There are a very small contingent of both House and Sand Martins also but no more than 50 birds combined.Also at the same site 2 singing Reed Warblers and single singing...

There cwas a single singing Whitethroat on Kerries Reserve Ossett vthis morning.Although not showing itself very well it was singing loud and clear from a small Hawthorn bush in the centre of the reservce only occassionaly coming out in to the open showing itself.

A Little Ringed Plover was circling around dewsbury Sewage works this morning.after 10 minutes inspecting the site the bird flew off to the west.Also 3 House martins in a party of some 20 Sand martins over the calder near Earlsheaton

at least 10 pairs of Sand Martins are excavating nesting holes at a new site on the River calder near Dewsbury.There was at least 20 birds present this morning as well as the 30 plus birds present at the colony near Healy Mills Ossett

A distant inspection of my local Sand Martin colony at Ossett this morning revealed encouraging signs.
There was at least 32 birds hovering around last seasons nesting holes (at least an hundred per cent increase) with another 140 birds feeding above the compost heaps adjacent to dewsbury sewage...
