Hobby Showing well on Kerriesfoods Reserve today

A Hobby was hunting Hirrundines and Large Dragonflies on Kerries Reserve this afternoon.The bird first appeared around 15:15 hours and was operating between the centre of the Reserve and the Sewage Works  border fence.

Things rather quiet on the birding front at the moment

There seems little birding activity in our area at the moment but there are some signs of post breeding activities. The stream that runs parrallel to Healy Road Ossett has been recently cleaned out of much vegetation (a good patch of Touch Me Not Balsam was an unfortunate casualty)and as a result...

Warbler numbers much diminished in our local patch( possible early dispersal) ?.

It is suddenly very noticeable in our part of the Calder valley how the good numbers of certain species such as Whitethroats and Phylloscopus Warblers have declined over the past few days.If this is due to end of season dispersal then it would appear that the dispersal is happening much earlier...

Thornhill Wetlands still holding good numbers of small birds

With allmost windless conditions in the valley this morning there was markedly less activity in the valley.There are still good numbers of Phylloscopus Warblers around Dewsbury Sewage Works particulary at the centre area of the old works which had around 25 Phylloscs and around 30 Common...

Birds Galore on the Kerries Nature Reserve.

There are now 142 Lapwings on Dewsbury sewage works.
1 little Ringed Plover on Dewsbury sewage Works.Also 2 Green Sandpiper and 2 Common Snipe. 3 new broods of Moorhen(making 7 broods this year)No sign of Cuckoos which appear to have moved on. 2 Oyster Catchers on filter beds.

4 Wigeon feeding on river bank near new road bridge on Dewsbury Sewage Works.A Green Sandpiper is on the river bank near Hotworks Mill.Otherwise as yesterday.Very few Pied Wagtails due to maintenance work being carried out on the Filter beds.2 Kingfishers on the calder between Healy Road and Hotworks Mill.6 Snipe on the Sewage works and a party of 6 Reed Buntings in the largest of the Phragmitese beds.A single Kestrel was hovering on the works.
Nearby on Kerries reserve.1 Chiff Chaff in the large hedge.2 Great spotted woodpeckers chasing each other in the central area and single male Sparrow Hawk from the willow plantation across the river.
